Distinguished and Famous people from Narrabri

1. Sir William Lawrence Bragg (1862-1971)

Sir William Bragg was an influential physicist and Nobel laureate born in the town of Wigton, Cumbria. Although not originally from Narrabri, he conducted significant research at the Australia Telescope Compact Array located nearby. Bragg was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1915, along with his father Sir William Henry Bragg, for their groundbreaking work in X-ray crystallography, leading to the determination of crystal structures.

2. Mark Donaldson (born 1979)

Mark Donaldson is a war veteran and recipient of the Victoria Cross for Australia, the highest military decoration awarded for valor. He was born in Waratah, New South Wales, which is near Narrabri. Donaldson was awarded the Victoria Cross in 2009 for his exceptional courage, selflessness, and leadership under intense enemy fire while rescuing a wounded interpreter in Afghanistan.

3. Brigadier General Charles B. Stone (1844-1914)

Charles B. Stone was a notable military officer who was born in Narrabri. He served in the American Civil War and eventually rose to the rank of Brigadier General. Stone was known for his involvement in various military campaigns during the Civil War, including the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.

4. Hugh D. McIntosh (1876-1942)

Hugh D. McIntosh was a renowned entrepreneur and sports promoter born in Narrabri. He played a significant role in the early development of rugby league in Australia. McIntosh was the founder of the publishing company "The Daily Mail" and organized numerous successful sporting events, including world championship boxing matches, swimming contests, and motor racing events.

5. Rebecca Wilson (1963-2016)

Rebecca Wilson was a prominent Australian sports journalist and media personality. Although not born in Narrabri, she grew up in the town. Wilson was known for her work as a sports journalist, columnist, and television presenter. She contributed to various media outlets, including The Sydney Morning Herald, Channel Nine, and Network Ten.

6. Peter Cosgrove (born 1947)

Peter Cosgrove is a retired military officer and former Governor-General of Australia (2014-2019). While he wasn't born in Narrabri, he spent part of his childhood in the town. Cosgrove had a distinguished military career and served as Chief of the Defence Force from 2002 to 2005. In recognition of his service, he was appointed as a Companion of the Order of Australia.
